Stephen returns to New Zealand following several years working for Clyde & Co LLP in London where he handled a number of high profile disputes, including claims involving international law firms and financial services providers.  Stephen holds a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge.  He was a judges’ clerk at the Auckland High Court, a junior barrister at Shortland Chambers, and a tutor of contract law at the University of Auckland.

Prior to joining Bell Gully in 2023:

Professional negligence

Acted for a large international law firm in respect of a claim brought by former government client involving allegations of negligence and a failure to follow client instructions.   

Breach of confidentiality and exclusivity agreement

Acted for a publicly listed UK multinational in the defence of a claim for £350 million for breach of a confidentiality and exclusivity agreement.  The case culminated in a four-week trial in the UK Commercial Court and judgment for the plaintiff for a fraction of the headline claim. 

Jurisdiction challenge

Acted for a large international law firm in a successful jurisdiction challenge to a claim alleging the firm’s involvement in a £1 billion fraud.
