About us

Bell Gully is a leading New Zealand law firm. As one of the oldest New Zealand firms, established in 1840, our history is deeply embedded in domestic business.

We value our longstanding corporate client relationships with the likes of ANZ, ASB, Air New Zealand and Fletcher Building, Carter Holt Harvey and Fisher & Paykel. In addition, we have a leading public sector practice and have worked with the New Zealand government on all of its recent innovative financial projects.

We have experts in all the areas of commercial law which our clients need. In addition to our five legal departments – corporate, litigation, banking and finance, real estate and projects and tax; we have specialist practices in competition, funds management, employment, trademarks and resource management. As with all leading firms globally, we recognise the importance to clients of having advisors who understand the industries in which they operate. The breadth of our industry focus and specialist practice areas are shown in the expertise section of the website.

Our overriding philosophy is that we believe an in-depth understanding of the law is only the first step in client service. Providing pragmatic commercial advice, which helps our clients achieve their business objectives, is our goal.

In line with our philosophy is a commitment to speak and give opinions in plain language.

Providing value for money is important to clients, so we take a tailored approach to fees which provides the flexibility to meet client expectations and needs. We regularly seek feedback from our clients to ensure they are satisfied with our delivery and we use the feedback to make improvements internally, where necessary.

We are a firm that values continual learning and development. We aim to recruit the best and brightest and we take pride in our track record in growing so many of our lawyers through to partnership.

Although distinctively a New Zealand firm, we are globally connected. We have a strong network of "best friend" legal firms globally who we frequently team with to provide the New Zealand component of multi-jurisdictional advice on client deals. In addition, we have a number of off-shore clients with interests in New Zealand as well as a growing practice advising private investors on their New Zealand based investments.

Our rankings in global directories and track record of winning legal awards for deals is second to none. We are proud of these independent endorsements of ours and our clients' work.
