Ian is a construction and projects lawyer with a reputation for quickly identifying legal and commercial issues and devising effective contractual solutions which enable the successful delivery of his clients' projects.

Ian advises on New Zealand's largest construction and infrastructure projects across a wide range of sectors, including transport, health, education, manufacturing and renewable energy.

He has acted for all levels of government in both New Zealand and Australia on a variety of major projects since 2007, as well as financiers, investors, developers and contractors.

Ian offers a point of difference to clients undertaking property development projects by combining his construction expertise with deep knowledge of real estate transactions. He has acted on some of the most unique and high-value property development projects in the New Zealand market.

Ian advises on:

  • consultancy engagement and other professional services agreements
  • asset management and maintenance contracts

NZ Transport Agency

Advising on the Northland Corridor PPP project, one of the most significant infrastructure upgrade investments to be undertaken in New Zealand.

Auckland Transport

Advising on all aspects of the establishment and implementation of the Eastern Busway Alliance EB2, EB3 and E4, and on the negotiation and implementation of the incentivised target cost contract for the Downtown Infrastructure Development Programme.

PAG Real Estate

Advising on premium grade commercial property transactions (covering forward purchase acquisitions, overseas investment office consents, development, leasing and financing), including the office buildings at 50 Albert Street, 136 Fanshawe Street and 155 Fanshawe Street, Auckland.

Health New Zealand

Advising on its Regional Hospital Redevelopment Programme, and the redevelopment of Whangarei Hospital which includes the design and construction of a new acute services ward, child health centre and ward tower.

Tauranga City Council

Advising on the incentivised target cost contract for Cameron Stage 1 Multimodal Project, and on its Civic Precinct redevelopment project ‘Te Manawataki o Te Papa’, comprising a new library and community hub, civic whare, museum, exhibition gallery, together with landscaping of public spaces in the CBD.  

Wellington City Council

Advised on strategic construction projects, including its Golden Mile Project to deliver transport and urban revitalisation upgrades to central Wellington, for earthquake strengthening of the Town Hall and to revitalise the Civic Square Precinct.

Fletcher Building

Advising on three separate large-scale brownfield projects involving the design and construction of new specialist processing plant factories, including the integration of specialist offshore plant with domestic civil and vertical construction.

Genesis Energy

Advising on the construction of its 100 MW / 200 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Huntly Power Station.
