Forestry and agribusiness

The forestry and agribusiness sectors continue to be the backbone of the New Zealand economy, and are facing increasing regulation.

Our expertise across the entire primary sector includes advising clients in the forestry, dairy, poultry, viticulture, horticulture, fisheries, red meat and wool industries. We have an outstanding track record in the forestry space, having been involved in almost every major forestry transaction which has occurred in New Zealand in the last two decades.

Our expertise includes advising on:

  • large scale, multi-faceted transactions, including business acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as investment by, or co-investment with, Iwi
  • Overseas Investment applications, which are of critical importance in transactions in these sectors, including sensitive land applications for farm land and applications under the special forestry test
  • forestry transactions (including acquisitions and sales of forests and wood processing operations), including forestry rights and leases, carbon leases, crown forestry licences, log and timber supply agreements and other commercial contracts
  • resource consent and planning applications and other environmental issues
  • industry-specific legislation (such as the Fisheries Act)
  • trade and quota access issues, the New Zealand emissions trading scheme and commodity levies, and
  • health and safety matters.
