New Commerce Commission Chair appointed

30 November 2022

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Dr David Clark has announced the appointment of Dr John Small as the new Chair of the Commerce Commission.

Dr Small is set to replace current Chair, Ms Anna Rawlings, on 5 December 2022 and his term will run through to June 2025.

Former economic consultant Dr Small has been an associate member and member of the Commission since December 2018. In that time, he has been involved in a wide range of high profile and complex matters, including the Commission’s market studies into the retail fuel sector, the grocery sector and residential building supplies. In addition to the market studies, Dr Small has also worked on a number of large merger matters, including Ampol’s acquisition of Z Energy and the merger of Mylan and Upjohn's global pharmaceutical businesses.

Dr Small has an impressive resumé and brings a wealth of experience to the role, including through his work as an academic during his tenure as Head of the University of Auckland’s Economics Department and as a lay member of the High Court. Dr Small is also the Founding Director of economic consultancy firm, Covec, where he worked for a number of years.

Bell Gully wishes Dr Small all the best as Chair, and looks forward to working with him in his new role. Bell Gully also thanks Ms Rawlings for her service as Chair over the past three-and-a-half years.
