FAQ

Bell Gully is a great place to start your career.

What does Bell Gully look for in a candidate?

We look for well-rounded candidates who have interests outside of university, such as cultural, sporting or community commitments or a part time job (in any area). We also value diversity, and actively look to recruit people from various backgrounds with different points of view.

Do I need straight A's to be considered?

No, while academic performance is important to us, we are looking to recruit well rounded candidates, who can achieve at university as well as within their broader interests and activities.

What information do I need to provide?
  • Your CV
  • A cover letter, and
  • A copy of your academic transcript.
Do you only look at my law papers?

While your law papers are important to us, we also look at the other papers you are studying.

What sets the Bell Gully summer programme apart from other intern programmes?

Our programme is designed to give you a genuine insight into life at a full-service law firm. You’ll rotate through three different practice areas, giving you exposure to varied work types, teams and leadership styles. You’ll be supported through a structured induction, meaningful work, a dedicated partner and mentor, and regular feedback — all designed to help you grow, not just observe.

Will I be involved in real legal work?

Absolutely. Interns work alongside partners and lawyers on real matters with real client outcomes. This could include research, drafting, due diligence, transaction support, or attending client meetings and internal discussions. You’ll be treated as part of the team from day one.

How much legal knowLEDGE do i need before starting?

We don’t expect you to know everything — or even much at all. We look for curiosity, willingness to learn, communication skills and the ability to take feedback on board. We provide the training and support; your job is to bring the attitude.

How Competitive is the process?

Applications are competitive, but your grades alone will not make or break your application. We review candidates holistically, considering academic results, lived experience, commitments outside university, cultural values, communication skills, and growth potential.

What if I have community, cultural or family commitments during the programme?

We understand and respect these commitments. We encourage interns to communicate early so we can support them in balancing important obligations alongside work.

If I am made an offer as a summer intern, am I assured a graduate position?

Graduate offers are made at the end of the summer programme to everyone who had a successful summer. When we make summer intern offers, we consider how many graduates we might need in the near future, so that we are in a position to make a future graduate role to all interns.

How does the summer intern programme fit into the overall career progression of staff?

Our summer intern programme feeds our graduate pipeline. A significant number of our previous summer interns and graduates are partners and senior associates in the firm.
