What does Bell Gully look for in a candidate?
We look for well-rounded candidates who have interests outside of university, such as cultural, sporting or community commitments or a part time job (in any area). We also value diversity, and actively look to recruit people from various backgrounds with different points of view.
Do I need straight A's to be considered?
No, while academic performance is important to us, we are looking to recruit well rounded candidates, who can achieve at university as well as within their broader interests and activities.
What information do I need to provide?
- Your CV,
- A cover letter, and
- A copy of your academic transcript.
Do you only look at my law papers?
While your law papers are important to us, we also look at the other papers you are studying.
What sets the Bell Gully summer programme apart from other intern programmes?
At Bell Gully you will have the opportunity to rotate through three departments. This provides you with the opportunity to experience different work types and teams. We focus on providing you with real work experiences, so that you have a good understanding of what it is like to work in a large full service law firm.
“What is unique about summer clerking at Bell Gully is that you rotate through three departments, which gives you the chance to decide what area you want to work in and also allows you to recognise what your strengths are.” – Lili Crombie, summer intern 2019/2020.
Will I be involved in real legal work?
“A highlight for me was seeing advice I had written taken directly into a mediation on behalf of our client.” – Brendan Courtney, summer intern 2021/2022.
If I am made an offer as a summer intern, am I assured a graduate position?
Graduate offers are made at the end of the summer programme to everyone who had a successful summer. When we make summer intern offers, we consider how many graduates we might need in the near future, so that we are in a position to make a future graduate role to all interns.
How does the summer intern programme fit into the overall career progression of staff?
“It’s been an incredible learning experience getting to really engage with the partners and senior lawyers who have been so welcoming of any questions and really quite generous in the time and advice that they give to the newer members of the firm. They’re really invested in helping develop you into a successful lawyer.” – Ben Toogood, summer intern 2019/2020.
