The winners of the annual Bell Gully National Mooting Competition have been chosen after a close competition in Wellington.
Desley Horton and Ben Prewett from Auckland University beat law students from around the country to win the competition and the right to represent New Zealand at the prestigious Jessup Moot Court Competition in Washington DC in March next year.
The final was held at the Court of Appeal in Wellington with Justice McGrath of the Supreme Court, Justice Hammond of the Court of Appeal and Bell Gully partner Mike Colson on the judging panel.
Mooting is a centuries-old way of training law students to present an argument in a court setting. Using a fictitious legal case, students – usually in pairs – present their side of the argument before a judging panel. They are questioned and assessed on style and the content of their argument.
Bell Gully is a long-time major sponsor of mooting in New Zealand and also assists the winning national team to compete at the Jessup competition.
