Transpower, owner and operator of New Zealand's national electricity grid, has awarded Fujitsu New Zealand a multi-million dollar contract to provide IT infrastructure services for the next three years, with potential to extend by up to a further five years.
Stephen Revill, Bell Gully partner who acted for Transpower on the contract agreement in collaboration with Transpower's internal legal advisers, says the transaction is significant in the wider context of outsourcing agreements in this country.
"Over recent years we have seen an increasing shift in the drivers behind outsourcing agreements. Rather than a focus on the performance of software and hardware in the case of IT for example, the move is towards addressing how desired levels of service can be achieved.
"The Transpower agreement is an excellent example of the current thinking and a progressive approach to managing complex IT environments in a challenging and critical business such as the country’s electricity supply," Stephen says.
The new agreement builds on an existing relationship, with Fujitsu having provided IT infrastructure services to Transpower since 1997. Among its significant components are clearly defined and measurable outcomes including service levels expected across multiple areas, ongoing knowledge-sharing requirements and measures to address the critical need for robust business continuity.
Along with Stephen Revill, Bell Gully solicitor Ben Warden also worked on the agreement for Transpower.
