Rebecca Holbrook has been named the Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand (CLANZ) – Bell Gully Young Corporate Lawyer of the Year for 2006.
Rebecca, General Counsel for Auckland-based Fisher & Paykel Appliances Ltd, was unanimously chosen as the winner by the judging panel of Sir Ian Barker QC, CLANZ outgoing president Nic Short and Bell Gully partner David Flacks.
The CLANZ – Bell Gully award, which includes a $5000 grant towards career development, is bestowed upon a lawyer who demonstrates achievement and potential to become a leading member of the in-house profession within 12 years of admission as a lawyer.
Bell Gully chairman David Simcock, who presented the award at the CLANZ annual conference in Christchurch in May, says it is a tribute to this year’s nominees that they impressed the judges well within that 12-year timeframe.
Rebecca’s nomination reflected the high regard in which she is held for her contribution as in-house counsel at Fisher & Paykel Appliances, as well as for her contribution to the wider legal profession. She was appointed to her first General Counsel role before the age of 30.
In other annual CLANZ awards, Bronwyn Barnard received the CLANZ – Wigley & Company Community Contribution Award for 2006. A senior solicitor with the Department of Conservation in Wellington, Bronwyn voluntarily gives time to a programme to help new refugee migrants settle in New Zealand.
The CLANZ Corporate Lawyer of the Year Award, selected by outgoing CLANZ president Nic Short, was awarded posthumously to Jennifer Lynch, who died in March this year. Jennifer was a lawyer with Treasury and had been made a significant contribution to the work of CLANZ, both as a committee member and as convenor of its annual conference in 2004.

Bell Gully partner David Flacks congratulates Rebecca Holbrook on winning the CLANZ – Bell Gully Young Corporate Lawyer of the Year Award for 2006.
