Niels' wide-ranging experience includes assisting corporates implement the most appropriate corporate structure whether by way of internal reorganisation or pursuant to a merger or takeover (including by way of amalgamation), and advising corporates on the tax implications of potential financial arrangements, including operating leases and project finance.
He has advised major banks on numerous financial structures and proposals including the development of financial instruments; cross-border leasing; finance structures; securitisation of mortgages and book debts; equity swaps; equity warrants; and sub-participation proposals.
He has been involved in assisting clients in major disputes with Inland Revenue.
A past convener of the New Zealand Law Society's Taxation Committee and regular presenter of papers on tax issues for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, he has also been a New Zealand tax reporter for the International Fiscal Association and authored the Employee Remuneration Handbook.

Chambers Global 2011 ranks Niels as a leading tax lawyer, and he is noted for his "practical approach" to complicated tax matters. Niels is also listed as a leading individual in tax in Asia Pacific Legal 500 2010/2011/2012, Who's Who Legal 2011 and PLC Which Lawyer?, which describes him as "one of New Zealand's leading corporate tax lawyers."
