Hugh's practice is split between major infrastructure projects and banking/capital markets. He also advises on insolvency issues.
He has strong international and domestic projects experience, particularly in the PPP/PFI, electricity, social infrastructure and LNG sectors. Hugh has been and remains heavily involved in the introduction of PPP procurement into the New Zealand market. He led the team advising the National Infrastructure Unit and The Treasury in connection with their proposed model form of project agreement. He is currently advising the Department of Corrections on the Wiri Prison PPP project and the Ministry of Education on its proposed PPP project.
In the banking area, he focuses on property finance (both development and investment), acquisition finance and project finance. He also advises on general bilateral and syndicated loan matters and on local authority funding arrangements.
Hugh has advised issuers, managers, trustees, guarantors and monoline insurers on a range of capital markets issues, including complex multi-sourced financings and the associated intercreditor arrangements. Hugh has acted on commercial paper and EMTN programmes as well as rated long term bond issues and various property syndicate structures.
He has acted for creditors on several large restructurings, in the electricity, construction, manufacturing, and rural sectors, as well as providing general corporate insolvency advice. He was involved in several high profile restructurings while working in London.
IFLR 1000 2012 names Hugh as a leading lawyer in banking and finance, with clients commenting he is "very good, responsive and commercial" and his "ability to advise on complex issues is outstanding".
